The post on The Republican brain reminded me of this book, The Authoritarians by Bob Altemeyer. It's available online in PDF format here: http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

Really good read. What I liked instead of focusing on leaders, a lot of what the author looked at was authoritarian FOLLOWERS which I found very illuminating.
