Our three panelists each have a unique understanding of misconduct and abuse by Buddhist teachers. They will share some of their expertise and insight in light of their work to address these issu

Meet Our Panelists:

Jan Chozen Bays, Roshi, MD has studied and practiced Zen Buddhism since 1973. She is the co-abbot of Great Vow Zen Monastery in Oregon and a pediatrician with 25 years’ experience in child abuse and domestic violence. She has written three books, Jizo Bodhisattva: Guardian of Children, Women and Other Voyagers, Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food, and How to Train a Wild Elephant: and other Adventures in Mindfulness, all by Shambhala Publishing. She has written articles for Tricycle and Buddhadharma magazines, including “What the Buddha Taught About Sexual Harassment.” Chozen is a wife, mother, grandmother, gardener and marimba player.

Scott Edelstein has studied with several spiritual teachers, including Toni Packer, Dainin Katagiri, Tim McCarthy, and Steve Hagen. He is a longtime practitioner of both Buddhism and Judaism, and a committed proponent of serious spirituality in all forms and traditions. He has been a member of Methodist, Quaker, Buddhist, and Jewish congregations. He is the author of Sex and the Spiritual Teacher: Why It Happens, When It’s a Problem, and What We All Can Do (Wisdom Publications, 2011). His book Breathe, Listen, Learn: A Practical Guide for Everyone Who Wants (or Has) a Spiritual Teacher, will be published in 2013 by Wisdom Publications. Scott is the author of sixteen other books on a wide range of subjects.

Roshi Wendy Egyoku Nakao is the abbot of the Zen Center of Los Angeles (ZCLA). She practiced Zen with Roshi Taizan Maezumi from 1978 until his passing in 1995. She received Dharma transmission from Roshi Bernie Glassman in 1997, becoming the abbot of ZCLA in 1999. Under her leadership, ZCLA has become a model for the governance practices of Shared Stewardship and Council discernment and decision-making, with an emphasis on collective awakening and wisdom.

Rev. Dr. Marie Fortune is the Founder and Senior Analyst at FaithTrust Institute. A graduate of Yale Divinity School, she is a pastor, educator, and author as well as a practicing ethicist and theologian. Her books include Keeping the Faith: Guidance for Christian Women Facing Abuse and Sexual Violence: The Sin Revisited.
